Buchbeschreibung Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by Joaquin de Alba (illustrator). First Edition. [solid copy with minimal shelfwear, tiny stain on bottom edge of text block; jacket has a couple of tiny nicks at top of spine, a couple of small closed tears along top edge of rear panel, very light surface rubbing]. (cartoon drawings) In the wake of the violent events of 1968 (including the RFK and MLK assassinations), a leading Spanish cartoonist took a harsh look at America's culture of violence by juxtaposing quotations from Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America," orginally published in 1835 and 1840, with politically-themed cartoons depicting conditions and events in the modern-day U.S. It ain't a pretty picture. "Combining the wittily acid pen of [de Alba] with the biting commentary made over a hundred years ago by Alexis de Tocqueville creates a volume providing a rare treat for the reader-observer of the American way of life." De Alba (1912-1983) had been a political cartoonist in Spain since the 1930s (the jacket blurb states that he was the "former official cartoonist in Franco's Spain"), but had been living and working in the U.S. for eight years at the time this book appeared; one of his cartoons was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1966. Among his fans was President Lyndon B. Johnson, who (not surprisingly) makes frequent appearances in de Alba's cartoons, and who even provided an endorsement of sorts, reproduced on the rear jacket panel. (It had to do with de Alba supplying originals of some of his cartoons for display at the LBJ Library in Texas.) Laid in to this book is a statement from the publisher, dated October 1, 1973, commending the book's previous owner "for suggesting the deTocquille [sic] theme" for the book, and praising her "creative approach and editorial assistance on several of our other books.".
