Inhaltsangabe

Milwaukeeans are interested in the history of their city and their region. They want to know who lived where and when, who built the structures that shape their everyday landscape, and how the institutions that serve them have changed over time. They are curious about the histories of their neighbors and neighborhoods, hospitals, churches, and schools. They ask each other where ancestors came from and how they decided where to worship. The present bibliography resulted from just these kinds of inquiries, on an unusually large scale. Amanda Seligman and Margo Anderson, the organizers of the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee (EMKE), a print and digital reference work in development, needed to find out what research had already been conducted on the Milwaukee's history. They brought in Ann Graf, the lead editor of this volume, to develop a bibliographic database to support EMKE research. They anticipated that the database would be used to help writers develop their entries and staff members verify the accuracy of the Encyclopedia's contents. As word got out about the existence of the EMKE they began to receive inquiries about Milwaukee history that they could help to answer using this database. Rather than wait for the publication of the Encyclopedia, the editors decided to make the contents of the database available to the public through a published bibliography. This Bibliography of Metropolitan Milwaukee is the result.
