" ""The authors have made an enormous contribution to the scientific literature in exercise biochemistry by effectively integrating the findings of researchers from Eastern Europe with those of scientists in Western countries."" Russell R. Pate, PhD Chairman, Department of Exercise Science, University of South Carolina ""Well written, concise, and clear. . .a very nice summary of what is scientifically known regarding intracellular regulation of muscle tissue. This work is unique because it brings together within one cover a summary of the basics of phosphorylation in muscle as well as the role played by cAMP in exercise and the effects of training on the cAMP system. Further uniqueness is derived through rendering available quality research on the topic from Eastern and Central European nations. Such work has been, until recently, unavailable to most Western scientists. Accurate documentation and the extensive bibliography contribute much to this monograph."" Christian W. Zauner, PhD, FACSM Professor or Exercise and Sport Science and Dean of the School of Health and Human Performance, East Carolina University "
This text examines the effects of acute and chronic exercise on the metabolism of cyclic AMP and protein kinase in cardiac and skeletal muscle. It also presents information gained during more than 20 years' work in the Soviet Union. Arranged in three parts, the study first provides a comprehensive review of the role of phosphorylation in the functional regulation of cardiac and skeletal muscle. In the second part, it presents information describing the effects of exercise on cAMP and cAMP-dependent protein kinase. The final part gives a summary of this information.
