Student assessment is as old as the historical profession itself. By addressing recent new developments in student assessment, and challenging today's historians to exercise a new level of sensitivity and self-consciousness in evaluating their students' learning, this pamphlet hopes to stimulate ongoing discussions about changes in student assessment.

Emily Sohmer Tai received her PhD from Harvard University in 1996, and is associate professor of history at Queensborough Community College, City University of New York. From 2004-06, she was a member of the American Historical Association's Teaching Division.
James Roth, who received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, has taught history at Alverno College since 1976. He is the co-editor of Disciplines as Frameworks for Student Learning: Teaching the Practice of the Disciplines (2005).
