In 1909, Camp (1867-1925) decided to write a more accurate account of the 1876 battle than popular legend provided, focusing on the heroism of the common soldiers. To do so, he would interview survivors, and to accomplish that, he constructed a roster of who was actually there. The muster rolls were published in Custer in 1876 , but without the information he had gathered about each soldier. Hordoff incorporates all the annotations made in Camp's handwriting, and biographical information culled from Camp's research papers and from other sources. The Indians, of course, are not named.
