In 1794, my great, great, great, great, great grandparents, Lazarus and Elizabeth Rine were among the first settlers in The Valley. Rine's Ridge was named for them. My dad was born and raised in Fish Creek and my mother was born and raised in Wheeling, both in West Virginia. I was born in Wheeling in 1932. My two sisters and I were all born at home. We were sixteen and eighteen months apart. My family moved to Moundsville in 1938. When Mother and Daddy moved to Moundsville, they rented a house that they lived in for about twenty years. They paid $16.00 a month in rent. The house had a front room, a kitchen, two upstairs bedrooms, fireplace heat, and a toilet and shower in the basement. When I got married twelve years later, in 1950 (I was 17 years old), I lived in an upstairs apartment for $15.00 a month. It had a bedroom/front room, a small kitchen and a bathroom.
