Operations in English
55 Natural and Logical Sequences for Language Acquisition
by: Gayle Nelson and Thomas Winters
Level: Beginner to advanced intermediate, Primary – Adult

An operation is a pair work activity in which students communicate naturally to accomplish a set task step by step. The students try to use language accurately. One gives instructions very clearly; the other follows them exactly. If the first student makes a mistake, the result is usually funny as well as instructive. The activity is effective both in building conversation skills and as a game.

What are the tasks? The 55 operations include classroom activities (using a calculator or making a paper airplane), household activities (setting a table or pounding a nail), games and exercises (hopping on one leg or playing dice), food and recipes (making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or pudding), communication (mailing a letter or using a fax machine), and such miscellaneous activities as writing a check or using an automatic teller or vending machine. After the initial pair work, the authors suggest a variety of follow-up activities, such as · having the students describe the sequence (in the first, second, or third person using whatever tenses they are working on) · creating new operations · writing mini dramas · doing related out-of-class research.

· Inexperienced teachers will appreciate the easy way each activity is presented and the simple explanation of what operations are and why and how to use them.

· More experienced teachers will find that these operations are quite compatible with a wide variety of teaching approaches like James Asher's Total Physical Response, the Silent Way, or the Natural Approach.
