In introducing his intellectual biography of Maynard Adams (1919-2003), Blackburn (U. of Virginia) remarks: "It is rare to find a major philosopher who was born and reared on a working farm." He traces the evolution of Adams's humanistic thinking from a tobacco farm in the segregated South to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and civic outreach beyond the ivory tower. His concept of "semantic culture" refers to values and assumptions that govern how people think about the world. In Ethical Naturalism and the Modern Worldview (1960), Adams presents "value realism" as an alternative to the view that sensory experience is the only source of knowledge.
