Many of the problems for river management today relate to landuse changes, water resource development and industrial expansion which have altered the pattern of run-off, the quality of river water, and the distribution and load of sediment delivered to river channels. To respond to these challenges, scientists must have a firm understanding of the physical and chemical processes that drive river ecosystems.
Drawing on chapters from the two volumes of The Rivers Handbook, this book presents the fundamental physical principles for understanding river systems. The first part focuses on hydrological processes within headwater catchments and moves on to consider flow variations within large rivers, and the modelling of these processes within a single river system. Later chapters examine the fundamental controls on water quality variation, and consider how flows and sediments interact to produce the range of channel forms that characterize different rivers. The book concludes with an examination of the potential impacts of future climate change on hydrological processes. Aimed at final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students, the book will also be of interest to all those concerned with river management, including environmental scientists, river engineers and conservationists.

Modern river management faces three main challenges: to meet growing demands for water resources; to control water quality and achieve effective waste management; and to sustain water and land resource values, including biodiversity and nature conservation. Integrated land and water planning based on the river catchment is a prime goal of sustainable development - but this must be based on a sound scientific understanding of the physical and chemical
