Paul Smith started writing and compiling books in the 1990s, initially on Engine Sheds but when his wife, Shirl, suffered a serious illness they started writing books together and topics have included Motorways, Tram Sheds, Football Grounds and, since she died in 2007, a number of other subjects. These included numerous atlases of the British railway system, London 'buses and garages, London railway depots, BR Departmental depots, BR diesel depots and British railway stations. He also undertook to visit and photograph all the National Rail stations, which he completed in 2018 (numbering some 2590). Happily, this is now ongoing as new stations are being added to the system on a regular basis. He has also visited many of the closed stations, both sites and surviving buildings.
