The papers in this book examine the place of medieval dialectology within the wider realms of historical linguistics and medieval studies. Contributors'interests cover philology, textual studies, codicology and palaeography, onomastics, word geography, lexicography, history and ethnology. They also bring expertise in different languages: English, Scots, French, Dutch, the Celtic and Scandinavian languages and Latin. This important breadth of interest is reflected throughout the present volume. The four sections deal with taxonomy and typology in medieval dialect studies; manuscript studies and literary geography; languages in contact; and word geography. Contributors: HANSF. NIELSON, P.TH. VAN REENEN, RICHARD BEADLE, A.I. DOYLE, JEREMY J. SMITH, ANTHONIJ DEES, ANGUS MCINTOSH, WILLIAM GILLIES, HELMUT GNEUSS, MICHAEL BENSKIN, TERRY HOAD, ROBERT E. LEWIS, GILLIAN FELLOWS-JENSEN
