Fans of Australian author Belinda Alexandra will enjoy her rambling, detailed narrative. In this novel, Alexandra tells the story of an orphan and a country, the development of a woman and the fall of a family. Through the adventures of Rosa, Alexandra provides a lush description of Italy before and during WWII. Caroline Lee gives a lovely performance and is perfectly suited for interpreting Rosa's griefs and joys. Although Lee's Australian accent at times pokes through the Italian setting, her careful portrayal of Rosa's moods and experiences brings the story and the reading together. Alexandra's storytelling is so engrossing that even 23 hours don't seem long enough. R.F. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine
