Franz Marc (1880-1916) was one of the most important members of the "Blue Rider" school of painters, together with other outstanding artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Munter, August Macke, Paul Klee and Alfred Kubin. The group marked the highpoint of German Expressionism and had a profound influence on international art during the brief period from its formation in 1911 to the beginning of World War I. This volume, the first of a three-part catalogue raisonne of Franz Marc's work, is devoted to the oil paintings. It includes all 244 paintings which have been newly researched and documented by the Stadtische Galerie at the Lenbachhaus in Munich. The chronology of the paintings has been thoroughly revised and updated and each entry provides details of technique, provenance, exhibitions and literature. All of the paintings are illustrated, most of them in colour. The resulting volume should be a valuable reference for art lovers, art historians and collections and offers fresh insights into the work of Franz Marc and the "Blue Rider" school as a whole.
Annegret Hoberg is Curator at the St dtische Galerie, the Lenbachhaus, Munich. She is responsible for the Blauer Reiter department and for the Kubin Archive. Isabelle Jansen is writing her Ph.D. thesis on Franz Marc for the Universit Paris-Sorbonne and is Curatorial Assistant at the St dtische Galerie, the Lenbachhaus, Munich.
