In 1829 Richard Pybus took up a large land grant on Bruny Island, the traditional home of the Nuenone people of south-east Tasmania. Within months of his arrival there were not Nuenone left on the island - they had either died from disease, or been murdered or exiled. Truganini, the last of the Nuenone, died in 1876, having spent her adult life in exile as a dependant of the colonial government.
Community of Thieves is a deeply personal account of how that tragic past remains in the present. Unearthing the stories of the Nuenone and the last tribal people of Tasmania, Cassandra Pybus reflects on the meaning this history has for her, one of those who have inherited Truganini's birthright.
