The series is launched by Mike Nelson, best known for creating immersive, multi-layered installations including The Coral Reef (2000). His selections from the V-A-C collection are drawn from his imagining of returning works from some of the twentieth-century's greatest sculptors to an environment suggestive of an artist's studio, naturally lit under the gallery's skylight. Amongst the masterpieces on display are Brancusi's The First Cry (1917), Giacometti's Femme Debout (1957) and works by Louise Bourgeois, Sherrie Levine, Henry Moore and Willem de Kooning, as well as by contemporary artists such as Pawel Althamer's Ognisko (Camp-fire) (2012), echoing recurring motifs in Nelson's work and his concerns of creating sculptural environments that hover between the figurative and the abstract. The publication also includes a brand new interview between Mike Nelson and Magnus af Petersens, as well as two new writings by Oliver Coates, who has created a musical response to Nelson's selection, and Travis Jeppesen whose work enacts a subjective, embodied encounter with and in response to art objects. The further three books, which all maintain a distinctive cohesive design theme, will evolve from displays selected by the acclaimed artists Fiona Banner, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and James Richards, following in Winter 2014, Spring 2015 and Summer 2015 respectively.
