About the book >.>.> Most of the world envied America in those days. A "Made in U.S.A." label carried great prestige, especially on an automobile, any one of which was considered "great" in most corners of the globe. And so it is in modern-day America, for the passage of time has a way of making the "good old days," and the "good old cars," seem better than they really were it should be remembered that for years cars of the Fifties were assailed for being overstyled and underdeveloped, needlessly large and thirsty, poorly built, and tastelessly gimmicky. A closer look reveals that there were notable exceptions to these criticisms, even though the cars of that era are often best remembered for fins and flash. Yet, there was progress-lots of it. Consider the reliable fully automatic transmission, perfected in the Fifties and universal today. The short-stroke overhead- valve V-8 also came to the fore in these years, a clear advance for power and fuel efficiency over traditional L-head engines. The best of the breed powered some.
