In the late 1960s, the civil rights movement had a list of grievances and a list of corresponding demands. At this Irish Association conference, representatives of community groups from all sections of Northern Ireland society, together with a number of senior civil servants and other policy-makers, came together to take stock, twenty-odd years later, and addressed the following questions. Have some of those old grievances been satisfactorily remedied? Do some of them linger and continue to fester? Is a more significant form of unjust discrimination in our society not against the unemployed and the poor, irrespective of their political or religious affiliation? Is the most widespread discrimination of all not against women in general?
The conference was organized around four workshops: poverty and social disadvantage; discrimination against women; discrimination in employment; and emergency legislation and the administration of justice. This book is an edited record of the proceedings.
