British society became more intensively urbanized in the Victorian period than ever before, and the nature and development of Victorian cities have spawned a rich historiography. Based on local research, this volume of essays examines some important aspects of the social history of Chester between 1830 and 1900. By combining case studies of specific themes with wider discussion of general issues, these essays explore the way in which Cestrian society reacted to the changing circumstances of the Victorian period and analyze local perceptions of, and responses to, a range of contemporary social problems.
