Hugh Muir is diary editor and a columnist on the Guardian. He joined the Guardian in 2004 as a senior news reporter and a specialist on London and its politics. He has also worked at The Mail on Sunday, the Daily Telegraph, the BBC and the Evening Standard. Shami Chakrabarti has been director of Liberty since September 2003. A barrister by background, she worked at the home office for five years, before joining Liberty as in-house counsel in 2001. She is chancellor of Oxford Brookes University and a governor of the London School of Economics and the British Film Institute.
'A man born three years before African-Americans had secured their right to vote had risen by popular acclaim to the highest office in the land before he reached 50. A political journey that should take generations felt as though it had occurred in a moment.' GARY YOUNGE 'It was obviously a slip, but was it Freudian slip? There is no way Gordon Brown would have announced during prime minister's questions yesterday that he had saved the world, like Superman recalling how he had shoved the giant meteor aside as it was about to crash into the Earth, is he'd been in full command of his brain.' SIMON HOGGART 'The big picture that has just drifted into Lost in Showbiz's mind is one of a post-apocalyptic hellscape, in which this column's future seld is distilling drinking water from its own urine and telling wistful tales of how pretty Trudie Styler's hair used to look to any passing urchings who survived the Great Exxon Wars.' MARINA HYDE 'Yesterday was more about the Ashes regained than Flintoff retired. He looked on while those younger and fitter than him did the job. He was content in that role. But he had to intervene once, just the once to leave us with a reminder.' VIC MARKS
In a year that saw the rise and rise of Barack Obama, the fall and rise of the financial markets and the New Labour project drifting, apparently to earth, here is The Bedside Guardian 09 to make sense of it all. It contains some of the best writing from the Guardian and Guardian Unlimited, encompassing the news reports, eyewitness accounts and investigative stories that have made this an award-winning year for both the newspaper and website. Always a rich mix, this year's collection does face to face with the Taliban, tells how the government colluded in torture, and unravels the evasions and half-truths surrounding the death of Ian Tomlinson, an ordinary man caught up in the G20 demonstrations in the heart of the British capital. We look at the care system, gun crime, political assassination in Sri Lanka, the 'war on terror' and the debate about our civil liberties. We reprise Harold Pinter's final interview. But there are other burning issues too. What would one say during five minutes with Justin Timberlake? Did Gordon Brown save the world? Did he think that he had? Did it need saving? What links Hitler to Russell Brand? Can anyone, with tuition, tlak like Robert Peston? What's so good about clock-watching? What's wrong with swingers? The Bedside Guardian 09 provides answers, and reviews an exhilarating year as seen by some of the finest writers in British journalism.
