Castles were lordly residences as well as fortresses and their military role was offensive as well as defensive. These facts are essential to the understanding of castles and to any understanding of their siting and architecture. This book, therefor, deals first with the purpose and function of cases. Feudal society is also discussed briefly, for no buildings can be understood without knowledge of the society which produced them. The origin of the castle as part and parcel of the origins of feudal society in France is demonstrated as a necessary preliminary to showing that both the castle and deudalism are a Norman importation into England and subsequently Britain at the time of the Norman Conquest. The various types of early castles are dealth with in detail and illustrated, as are the castle's subsequent development and eventual decline. While the book's geographical purview is England and Wales, there is of necessity reference to France, whence castles come. The book covers castles from the tenth to the sixteenth century and cites many examples.
