A general introduction to the vast and complex subject of glass: not only the history and technology of glassmaking, but also the social background and the lives of the glassmakers.

Glassmaking was known to the ancient Egyptians, though the technique of blowing glass was not introduced until the Roman period. The construction of glasshouse and furnace altered considerably over the years and the spectacular English contribution was the lofty brick glasscone, which acted as a chimney for the furnace but also housed the glass-makers, who worked in teams around the furnace in the centre.

The author takes the reader inside the cone, describes the basic glassmaking techniques and explains the mysteries of the rich vocabulary that surround this ancient craft.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor

Roger Dodsworth is Keeper of Glass at Broadfield House Glass Museum, Kingswinford. He has lectured widely both in Britain and the USA, and is the author of numerous articles on glass. He is a member of the Glass Circle and a founder-member of the Glass Association, on whose committee he has served since 1983.
