Breakthroughs in understanding the genetics of animals are making headlines worldwide. However, many issues remain unresolved, despite the remarkable progress. This volume collects up-to-date research on the genetics of cattle, a field of immense economic and political importance, particularly with the discovery of "Mad Cow" disease. Topics covered include domestication, common breeds and their origin; morphological traits and inherited disorders; immune response and disease resistance, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy; development and reproductive technologies and transgenics; and genetic resources, conservation and improvement. It will be an invaluable resource for anyone studying genetics and contemporary methods in animal breeding.
