The Japanese plan this time was elaborate. Their 4th and 124th Regiments, with heavy artillery and tanks, were to hit positions on the lower Mataniko, then push towards Henderson Field. The 16th and 29th Regiments would go by them and, following an artillery barrage, attack the southern perimeter. The lower Mataniko attack was one of several scheduled to hit at the same time. Another would fall on the upper Mataniko, while a third would hit Bloody Ridge. Unfortunately for the Japanese, their heavily loaded troops failed to get into position for their assigned attacks by 'D-Day' on 22 October. Their commanders did not know this, however, because of poor communications. At 6pm on 22 October, Japanese artillery opened up on the lower Mataniko positions held by the 1/7th Marines and a battalion of the 164th. Following the barrage the Japanese infantry charged, led by nine 18-ton tanks. Marine antitank fire stopped all but one tank, which rolled over the American foxholes until a Marine jammed a hand grenade in its tracks. With that the tank rocked back and forth once, and a tank destroyer caught it in its sights. A lucky shot, which must have hit its ammunition supply, blew the tank twenty yards back into the sea. The attack was stopped. After that attempt had been beaten off, General Vandegrift reasoned that the main attack would fall on the upper Mataniko. The 2/7th Marines were sent to reinforce the 3/7th Marines already there. This left Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis 'Chesty' Puller's 1/7th Marines as the only force holding Bloody Ridge. At about 3am on 24 October the next Japanese attack was launched, hitting the 1/7th on the ridge. By 3.30 the I64th's reserve battalion was sent in as reinforcements. Even though they went into strange positions, under fire and at night, the Army troops acquitted themselves well. It was the Marines who had to take the main weight of the defence, however. Sergeant John Basilone, who earned the Medal of Honor that night, said later, 'They kept coming and we kept firing. We all thought our end had come.' The attack was a typical banzai charge, notable for a lack of tactical subtlety. " (S. 11) ISBN 0850453119 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 250. Artikel-Nr. 1254335
