This book derives from the author's experience in assisting post-graduate students and other researchers commencing work on aspects of 19th-century studies involving the location and use of unpublished materials. For the newcomer to this field the complex structure of national, local and specialised repositories in Great Britain can often prove extremely confusing. Furthermore, the very diversity of finding aids to unpublished sources within particular subject fields may well add to the sense of confusion. The present work aims to provide a short and uncomplicated introductory guide to the indentification and use of collections of primary source materials. Information is given both about the main types of collections in Britain and about the guides to their location and contents. Guides to over-seas collections are also briefly noted. Discussion of the major general collections is followed by a survey of the sources of information about primary materials in a number of subject areas. the final section of the book discusses practical questions concerning the use of unpublished materials and the terminology employed by archivists. Full bibliographical references are given to guides and other reference and background works cited and a selective index is provided to facilitate quick reference to the main topics. It is hoped that PS VS will prove useful not only to those commencing research but also to junior staff engaged in information work in libraries, reposi-tories and similar institutions.
