Inhaltsangabe
Giorgio Vasari remarked that Luca Signorelli was "as famous a painter in Italy as any one has ever been." Mentored by Piero della Francesca, he developed a unique style which was characterized by violent and torturous movement of the figures and complex iconography. In this continuation of our successful Renaissance painters' series, Signorelli experts Tom Henry and Laurence Kanter offer a thorough consideration of the artist's entire body of painting in the first comprehensive treatment of his work.

Publisher's cloth. Zustand: Nearly fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. First American edition. Large quarto (33 by 27.5 cm / 13 by 10-7/8"). 272 pp; frontispiece, 85 color and 148 b/w illus. Publisher's red cloth, lettered in gilt. Faintest toning (barely noticable) along 2 cm page margins. A nearly fine copy in fine jacket. First American edition of the only comprehensive book dedicated to the works of Luca Signorelli (ca. 1450-1523), one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance. According to the contemporary Italian painter and writer, Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), Signorelli passed his apprenticeship in the workshop of Piero della Francesca. The editors remind us that Signorelli absorbed many influences, and notably that his "forms, colours, decorative details and even his effects of lighting and his compositions reflect an intimate acquaintance with the practice of Andrea del Verrochio's workshop, the most intellectually productive in the late quattrocento Florence" (chap. 1). Signorelli accepted commissions from the wealthy and powerful in Florence, Siena, and Rome, and painted a section (sadly, now lost) of the Sistine Chapel. His frescos of the Last Judgment in the cathedral at Orvieto are generally considered his greatest achievement. Artikel-Nr. 56213
