Phonics and Word Study is designed to help students develop the skills necessary for independence in reading. Level A is devoted primarily to the auditory perception of sounds and the association of these sounds with the written syllables that represent them. The book focuses on the development of manuscript handwriting: the initial, medial, and final sounds of consonants; short and long vowels; the initial sounds of consonant blends; and the initial, medial, and final sounds of consonant digraphs. It also introduces adding s to form plurals.
