Gr 5 Up--A revised and expanded edition of the Hammond Comparative World Atlas (1994), this comprehensive reference tool skillfully combines computer-generated maps with a well-assembled narrative to create a complete picture of the world. A "Quick Reference Guide" provides an alphabetical listing of geographic areas accompanied by their size, capital cities, population, page number, and grid reference. Physical and political maps are paired with accurate land-elevation and ocean-depth profiles and comparative population and land-area data. A series of beautifully composed world maps, charts, and graphs impart political, economic, geologic, and cultural themes, addressing topics such as the structure of the earth, population growth, environmental hazards, standards of living, and global politics. Facing physical and political maps of each continent enable readers to explore the unique relationship between geography and politics. These land areas are also assigned clear and precise thematic maps that depict average January and July temperature, vegetation, population distribution, energy sources, etc. The meticulously detailed regional maps, amplified by "elevation coloring and relief shading" are the hallmark of this work; they efficiently indicate features such as boundaries, cities, towns, and mountain peaks.
