Frisch (modern languages and literature, Duquesne U.) takes on both Borge's work and his critics by closely reexamining Borge's symbols and techniques and their influence on postmodern literature. Frisch finds that Borges, despite all the critical commentary to the contrary, never actually crossed over into radical relativism. Working through the very large corpus of Borge's work, Frisch tests it against the now-traditional themes of monism and chaos, pluralism and meaning, the self, feminism, history, politics, and the new literature of the Americas. He finds significant questions to feed into the postmodern debate about Borges, and also finds many cogent reasons why Borge's work in ambiguity, consciousness, and the function of reality influenced so much contemporary writing and criticism but left so many questions.
