'Darwin R. Labarthe received his A.B. from Princeton University, his M.D. from Columbia University, and his M.P.H. and Ph.D. degrees in epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Labarthe’s professional activities from 1970 through 1999 were based primarily in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas in Houston, where he was James W. Rockwell Professor of Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health.' From 1973-1977, he served as a Consultant in Epidemiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.' 'In 2000 he joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. There he led the development and implementation of the long-range public health strategic plan, A Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke. He is Past Chair of the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and founding Director of CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention.' Dr. Labarthe’s research and teaching activities have primarily been in the area of cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention, with special interest in early development of risk factors in childhood and adolescence. At CDC, his work has turned to public health policy and practice in the prevention of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic diseases. He has published more than 200 research articles and book chapters.' 'Dr. Labarthe has received the 1998 Abraham Lilienfeld Award for teaching of epidemiology, from the Epidemiology Section of the American Public Health Association; the 2006 Joseph E. Stokes, III, Preventive Cardiology Award from the American Society of Preventive Cardiology; the 2007 Eugene Braunwald Mentorship Award of the American Heart Association, and the 2008 Charles C. Shepard Science Award for Assessment and Epidemiology at CDC, among other distinctions.'
