Inhaltsangabe

In 1969 in Den Haag, the six founder members of the EEC agreed to embark on the creation of an economic and monetary union. On 1 January 1999, eleven member states of the EU entered the final stages of EMU, creating a common currency area: the Euro Zone. Initially, the national currencies of these countries co-exist with the Euro, but on 1 July 2002 at the latest, the Euro will be their sole legal tender.
This introduction to a historically important transition provides both historical and theoretical background and engaged prognosis. Coffey examines the reasons why the EEC made its original decision to move along the road to EMU "provided the political will to do so existed", the earlier attempts at creating EMU, and the present situation. He assesses the Euro's qualities as a currency, examining the institutional arrangements (notably the European Central Bank and the European System of Central Banks), the policy choices, and the possible implications for countries both inside and outside the Euro Zone.
