Bennett addresses in her study of Stothard and of how his work reveals the changing nature of the artist's role in the increasingly industrialized society of turn-of-the-century England. Bennett examines the ways in which Stothard catered to the market in history paintings, ceramics, silverwork, landscape, sculpture, and, above all, book illustration. She also explores his long and intimate association with John Flaxman and William Blake, the context in which he is perhaps best known today.
