Dustwrapper bright. ***530 pages including Selected References in "Youth", Glossary and List of Contributors at the back of the book. 242mm x 160mm. ***'Mori Ogai's (1862-1922) stature among modern Japanese writers is virtually unparalleled, but until recently his work in translation has languished in scholarly monographs and journals. In "Youth and Other Stories", noted Japan scholar J. Thomas Rimer has gathered several of Ogai's best-known stories and the first complete translation of a major work, "Seinen" (Youth). Rimer has chosen the best English translations available to accompany ones prepared especially for this anthology. Scholars and students of modern Japanese literature - of modern Japan as a whole - will appreciate this anthology of work by one of Japan's most gifted writers, a central figure of Meiji thought and letters.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper. ***'Lieutenant-General Mori Rintar? ( Feb 17, 1862 - Ju 8, 1922), known by his pen name Mori ?gai was a Japanese Army Surgeon general officer, translator, novelist, poet and father of famed author Mari Mori. He obtained his medical license at a very young age and introduced translated German language literary works to the Japanese public. Mori ?gai also was considered the first to successfully express the art of western poetry in Japanese. He wrote many works and created many writing styles. "The Wild Geese" (1911-1913) is considered his major work. After his death, he was considered one of the leading writers who modernized Japanese literature.' The dry biographical approach is shunned and the emphasis is placed on the larger issues that derive from these author's lives and works. A few of the men and women included are well known in the West: the fifteenth-century Zen priest and poet Ikkyu, for example. But the majority are great or near-great authors about whom nothing has so far appeared in English. The selection was made with a view to showing the richness and variety of Japanese literature in each of the four periods discussed: the fifteenth century, the sixteenth century, the Kinsei Period (160-1867) and the Meij Period (1868-1912).'
