Grade 4-7 A hodge-podge of projects, grouped into 13 subject areas. The experiments use a combination of household and laboratory items, including glass tubes, batteries, copper wire, diodes, and lenses, to construct various viewing, measuring, or other devices (periscope, kaleidoscope, microscope, weather station, burglar alarm) and/or perform scientific investigations. Each experiment is illustrated with a clear black-and-white line drawing shaded in blues. The number of projects packed into each page does not allow space for lists of materials needed or numbered step-by-step directions. The materials used are identified only in the captions of the illustrations, requiring a certain amount of deductive reasoning just to get started. Some of the projects require cutting or sawing, and/or use of lit matches or candles, without appropriate cautions for those activities. One section omits far more than it includes about successfully setting up and maintaining a home aquarium. It tells how to add water without disturbing plants or pebbles, but not how to choose or install the plants and pebbles, or how to "age" or treat new tap water before using with fish. It cautions against overcrowding the aquarium, but gives no guidelines for choosing the size of the tank or the appropriate number of fish. The many subject-specific and general books on science projects by Seymour Simon, Vicki Cobb, and others are more attractive, more informative, and easier and safer to use. Susan L.
