Lannes (mathematics, National Center of Scientific Research, Paris) proposes a simple and robust framework for addressing some important issues raised by the many water waves equations. Such a global approach is sometimes not compatible with sharpness, he confesses, and he has chosen to sacrifice the latter when necessary--for example on minimal regularity assumptions. The material could interest a wide range of researchers, he says, and he has tried to keep the chapters as narrowly topical as possible so readers can, if they want, read only those that interest them. Among the topics are the Laplace equation, the well-posedness of the water waves equations, shallow water asymptotics, deep water models and modulation equations, and water waves with surface tension.
