This introductory treatment examines the potential theory of the heat (or diffusion) equation in its own right, apart from classical potential theory. The author does not attempt complete coverage, and the probabilistic approach is not mentioned. Material is presented in logical order, rather than chronological order of discovery, from the heat operator and mean values through subtemperatures and the Dirichlet problem, temperature on an infinite strip, green functions and heat potentials, polar sets and thermal capacity, and thermal fine topology. Chapters conclude with bibliographic notes, comments, and discussion of open questions. Prerequisites include background in the calculus of functions of several variables, the limiting processes and inequalities of analysis, measure theory, and general topology.
