Although the September 2002 workshop was held in honor of the late physicist Bob Sharp, whose "most important and lasting contribution is his series of functions in group representation theory," the 21 papers from the workshop presented do not limit themselves to only the fields in which Sharp worked, instead treating a range of topics around the theme of symmetry in physics. Examples include physical applications of a five-dimensional metric formulation of Galilean invariance, boson realizations of semi-simple Lie algebras, group actions on compact hyperbolic manifolds and closed geodesic, and transient effects in Wigner distribution phase space of a scattering problem. Also included is a reminiscence of Professor Sharp by a colleague and former teacher. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
