In these proceedings of the symposia held January 2003, seven contributors give a survey and introduction to public-key cryptography that assume considerable mathematical maturity and considerable mathematical knowledge. One very interesting outcome was perhaps a greater understanding of cryptography itself, which is very difficult or nearly impossible to explain using formal algorithmic or other mathematical notions. Papers presented included such topics as cryptographic primitives, real-world cryptography, proofs of security, elliptic curves and cryptography, two papers detailing faster crytosystems, and the hidden number problem, lattices and exponential sums.
