This is the first of three volumes originating from a series of lectures in mathematics for high school students, given by professors of Kyoto University in Japan. The main purpose of the lectures was the show students the beauty of mathematics using material that is accessible to people with little preliminary knowledge. A chapter on topology contains three lectures on the Euler characteristics, vortices created by winds, and curvature of the surface. Three lectures on dimension address the Peano curve, Poincaré's approach, and three-dimensional manifolds. The book was originally published in Japanese in 1995 by Iwanami Shoten, Publishers, Tokyo, Japan. There is no subject index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
