Bases for Effective Reading was first published in 1965.The importance of proficient reading in this day and age can hardly be overemphasized since the reading process is fundamental to most of our daily activities. The studies reported here are significantly related, therefore, to the overall goals of education.Professor Tinker presents the findings and conclusions of numerous studies of basic psychological and physiological aspects of the reading process, factors which underlie many reading problems and difficulties in the teaching of reading. Much of the research was carried out by the author during his 32 years at the University of Minnesota. Reports of related research findings by others are included to provide a comprehensive picture of the areas covered. The book is divided into sections on reading, perception, and comprehension; on eye movements in reading; on scientific typography; on visual functions and illumination for reading; and on appraisal of reading proficiency. There is a comprehensive bibliography.Because the topics range widely, the book will be useful in various ways. Those now teaching reading will find that it provides a solid foundation for their classroom practice. It will reinforce or challenge the theories of college and university faculties instructing the future teachers of reading. Also, those engaged in research work on reading will find its summary of the present state of the field helpful.
