Although poverty has decreased over the past two centuries, about 40 percent of the world's population still lives on less than $2 per day. Sylvia Whitman has written several books for young adults and numerous articles for publications including The Orlando Sentinel, Southern Discourse, The National Culinary Review, and Writer's Digest. She obtained an M.A. in Arab studies from Georgetown University and an M.A. in American studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Foreword author Steven N.
