Inhaltsangabe

Divided into two major parts, the book first provides in-depth coverage of topics such as insomnia, narcolepsy, and the interplay between psychology and sleep. The latter topic, for example, indicates that long-term, poor sleep can have a debilitating effect on self-regard, escalating into a sense of helplessness and hopelessness. The second and far greater part of the book is a sleep glossary with entries like delta sleep, American Board of Sleep Medicine, and parasomnia. Appendices list tips on selecting a mattress and sources of information on sleep (including websites). Thorpy is director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and Yager is a sociology Ph.D. and author of several non-professional books and articles. These authors also co-authored The Encyclopedia of Sleep and Sleep Disorders. Geared toward lay readers. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
