The unique index-gazetteer contains some 210,000 entries, all of which have been fully updated to reflect the changes in the maps and have been thoroughly cross-referenced, including Chinese place names and their Pinyin equivalents. The index's grid system for locations of place names is supplemented by latitude and longitude coordinates --a feature not found in most other atlases--so that points can be located within half a mile. Extensively redesigned front matter. The Seventh edition's preliminary matter, totally rewritten and updated, contains many new elements. There are seen new full-color maps of the physical earth, as well as photographs and diagrams of the universe, galaxies, solar system, and planets, which incorporate the latest in space photography. The graphs, charts, diagrams, maps and index reflect the then most recent data in climatology, world food productions, and trade, population distribution,world energy production and consumption, and world vegetation and temperature. An atlas is a collection of maps; it is typically a bundle of maps of Earth or of a region of Earth. Atlases have traditionally been bound into book form. In addition to presenting geographic features and political boundaries, many atlases often feature geopolitical, social, religious and economic statistics. They also have information about the map and places in it. The first work that contained systematically arranged maps of uniform size representing the first modern atlas was the collection of maps Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by the Brabantian cartographer Abraham Ortelius printed in 1570. Atlases published now are quite different from those published in the 16th-19th centuries. Unlike today, most atlases were not bound and ready for the customer to buy, but their possible components were shelved separately. The client could select the contents to their liking, and have the maps colored/gilded or not. The atlas was then bound.
