Reseña del editor

Pensions and the Economy contains six papers--with additional commentary--presented at a March 1990 Pension Research Council conference. Taken together, these papers serve to identify the significant policy issues, summarize the known facts, and highlight the main data requirements for future research. Readers will find that the material reported here is highly relevant to policy debates, since it covers all the substantive issues and represents a broad range of perspectives.
The volume was expressly designed to present multiple viewpoints. Each chapter starts with a paper written by two researchers, and concludes with commentaries from one or more experts in the pension and benefit fields.
In the first five chapters, the contributors focus on the major ways in which pensions affect the economy of the United States. They discuss the impact of pensions on labor productivity and retirement behavior, on funding and investment policy, and on national savings and the federal budget, as well as pension coverage. A sixth chapter explores the international experience with pensions. In addition, the editors have included an invaluable appendix containing an exhaustive survey of data sources on pensions.
Pensions and the Economy is an indispensable resource for academic researchers, practitioners, and policy makers in the areas of pensions and benefits. It will also be of interest to students of economics and business.
