Nadeau seeks to answer the question posed in the title by examining the hypotheses of two contemporary, opposing cultures--the scientists-engineers who argue that consciousness and AI (artificial intelligence) computer systems will evolve into entities as complex as humans and then transcend humanity and the humanist-social scientists who argue that human life and consciousness are an "ultimate" value that can only be poorly approximated by computers. He reviews current AI thinking and research, particularly in the area of neural networks, where some of the most promising work is being done. He concludes with a plea for more understanding between the two cultures and, particularly for the AI engineers-scientists to conduct their research and design their systems in a morally responsible manner.
