A young boy finds a deeper connection with his Lakota heritage
Mike Blue Thunder is preparing for the ceremony where he will receive his Lakota name. It's a special tradition that will connect him to his people and their history, and everyone on the reservation Mike calls home is preparing in excitement for the big day. Everyone except for Mike's grandpa, that is. As Mike learns more about his family's history, he comes to understand the real importance of traditions.

Bob Pirner is originally from Spring Creek Community on the Rosebud Lakota Reservation, and is a fluent speaker of the Lakota Sioux language. Growing up in an isolated community that held on to traditional values, Bob learned a way of life that honors generosity and courage. He currently resides in Elkins, West Virginia. He has written two books about nonprofit leadership using Lakota principles.
Aly McKnight is an enrolled member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. She is an artist and illustrator who uses vibrant colors to tell Indigenous stories. Her tribal homelands are in Fort Hall, Idaho, where she currently resides, but she was born and raised in northern Nevada. She spends her days sketching, painting, collaborating with the Indigenous creative community, and adventuring with her family.
