This fully annotated Latin edition, by Daniel H. Garrison, of Horace’s Epodes, Odes, and Carmen Saeculare is the first comprehensive English commentary on these works since 1903. The full text of the Epodes is included and placed before the Odes, as it was originally written and published. Garrison offers help with meter, vocabulary, and difficult points of grammar. For advanced students, he place Horace against the background of archaic and Hellenistic Greek poetry, demonstrates the poet’s debt to Catullus, and illuminates Horace’s relation to his contemporaries, particularly Virgil. Biographical information and a discussion of Horace’s literary persona expand our view of the poet and his works. Appendices on meter, persons mentioned in the poems, and technical terminology provide what readers end to understand topical and mythological references, rhetorical conventions, and poetic artistry.

Unintentionally, Daniel Garrison has led a bit of an adventurous life. It was never his desire to do so, as he would much prefer a more placid, settled existence, yet fate has always had other plans for him. Through the years, Daniel, who holds a degree in journalism, chronicled many of his stranger experiences, along with some of the more eccentric characters he met. Recently, he undertook a journey of a different sort-he decided to forge his stories into a book. Drifting in the Push, the first of two books in the series, is now available to booksellers worldwide.

University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1991. 397p. Paperback. Upper corner slightly bumped. 'This edition comprises a text of the 'Odes', 'Epodes' and the 'Carmen Seculare', and some tow hundred pages of commentary, which explicitedly eschew critical or aethetic judgements. (.) In keepint with the undergraduate readership envisaged, there is abundant assistance with grammatical explication and poetic diction. There are useful maps of Horace's Italy and the Mediterranean basisn, as well as a glossary of literary or rhetorical terms, which reflects the emphasis which Garrison attaches to figures of speech and thought. The best feature of the commentary is the author's often-demonstrated ability to capture the essence of a Horation phrase in a pithy formulation (.).' (LINDSAY C. WATSON in The Journal of Roman Studies, 1994, pp.267-68). Artikel-Nr. 34155
