Drawing on Foucault, Culler argues for ad hoc resistance to those forces that have reactionary social effects, and takes up the case of criticism's contribution to the cultural respectability of religion, whose consequences he explores in a hard-hitting essay. Readers will find particularly useful Culler's comprehensive analysis of the work of Paul de Man a body of criticism crucial for contemporary critical debates that has never been presented with such clarity and understanding. In a further section of lively essays on the Law, Tourism, and Junk, Culler explores the usefulness of contemporary theory, particularly deconstruction and semiotics, to the analysis of social phenomena. In the final section of Framing the Sign he focuses on problems of language and context: in a critique of Habermas's influential attempt to infer norms of language from communicative practice, Culler seeks to widen the context of debate; in an analysis of recent theories of narrative in fiction he exposes some dubious presuppositions about the literary context; and in a final speculative essay he asks how we may seek to construct a comprehensive linguistics of writing.
