Der Titel stammt aus einer Frage, die Admiral Rickover ihm während eines Vorstellungsgesprächs nach seinem Abschluss an der Naval Academy gestellt hat. Hast du dein Bestes gegeben?" Rickover fragte. Carter antwortete zunächst "Ja, Sir", aber nach einigem Nachdenken sagte: "Nein, Sir, ich habe nicht immer mein Bestes gegeben." Er beschreibt die Szene Jahre später, Carter schreibt: "Er stellte eine letzte Frage, die ich nie vergessen oder beantworten konnte. Er sagte: "Warum nicht?"
