Über die Autorinnen und Autoren

Max Velthuijs was born in The Hague in 1923. Among the many awards he has won for his books are the Dutch Silver Pencil Award and the Dutch Golden Paintbrush (twice), the American Graphic Award of the Society of Illustrators, the French Prix de Treize, and the German Bestlist Award (also twice). Mr. Velthuijs lives with his son in The Hague. He enjoys cooking Chinese food and playing chess, and he loves children and animals.


Max Velthuijs (1923-2005) was born in The Hague, the Netherlands. His picture books—published in 14 different languages, in countries all over the world—teach children about friendship, compassion, and sensitivity toward others. Among the many awards he received for his books are the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration in 2004, the Dutch Silver Pencil Award and the Dutch Golden Paintbrush (twice), the American Graphic Award of the Society of Illustrators, the French Prix de Treize, and the German Bestlist Award (also twice).
