Murray Gell-Mann (1929-2019) was a theoretical physicist who introduced the concept of quarks. He was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in physics. He taught at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and the California Institute of Technology. A longtime director of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Professor Gell-Mann served as chairman of its Committee on World Environment and Resources.
